2012 Career Initiation Grant

The goal of the FACES AGEP program is to assist universities in developing programs to increase the number of minorities pursuing advanced degrees in engineering and science.  In particular, the program will aim to increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing careers in academia.  One facet of this program is the FACES Career Initiation Grant.  The program will award one $30,000 "Career Initiation Grant" to a promising doctoral graduate student that accepts a tenure track faculty position in engineering or science related field at a U.S. college or university.  These funds are intended to assist newly minted PhD's at an early stage in their academic careers.  The grant can be used to purchase research equipment, travel, and support graduate and/or undergraduate researchers.

Eligibility: To be eligible, you must fulfill the following requirements;

• Currently-enrolled science or engineering doctoral students at Emory University or Georgia Institute of Technology who complete doctoral degrees by September 1, 2012;
OR Science or engineering doctoral alumni of Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse College, or Spelman College who completed doctoral degrees since September 1, 2007;
OR Post-doctoral fellows at Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse College or Spelman College who completed doctoral degrees between September 1, 2006 and September 1, 2012.

• Must have job commitment by December 31, 2012

Application: The application form must be accompanied by: 1) a career development plan (4 page maximum), 2) a resume, and 3) two letters of recommendation (one must be from a faculty member).  The letters of recommendation should be emailed directly to Dr. DesRoches (

The career development plan should be a clear statement of the nature and implementation of the integrated research and education goals and activities during the initial five-year period of employment as a professor.  Plans in both areas should be specific and directly related to the applicants career goals.  Applicants are encouraged to describe a range of planned activities that include research and education activities that move beyond routine education and service responsibilities.  Educational activities can include designing new materials and practices, and/or adapting and implementing effective educational materials and practices developed elsewhere.  A discussion of the relationship between the research and education aspects should be included as evidence of an integrated career-development plan. 

This section should present:

  • Objectives and significance of the proposed integrated research and teaching activities;
  • The relation of the research to the current state of knowledge in the field, and of the education activities to the current state of knowledge on effective teaching and learning in one's discipline;
  • An outline of the work plan, describing the methods and procedures to be used and including an evaluation of the education activities; and
  • A summary of prior research and education accomplishments
